UK Construction contract wins up 24% in May

Contract wins rose 23.9% in May compared to April, according to latest Glenigan figures.

Total wins across the top fifty contractors’ rose to £2.27bn for the month, up from £1.83bn in April. This is a 28.2% decline since the £2.57bn recorded in March.

Kier secured the top spot in the monthly league, pushing it ahead of Balfour Beatty in the annual table, by securing 22 deals worth a total of £225.7m. The contractors total was bolstered by winning a programme of healthcare work worth in excess of £100m as part of the ProCure21+ framework.

Lend Lease took second place in May, after securing a £151m deal with the Ministry of Justice to build a 2,100 capacity prison in Wrexham.

Royal Bam ranked third in the league after securing a range of medium-value contracts during the month, particularly in the education and infrastructure divisions.

Other major wins worth noting include:
VolkerFitzpatrick’s contracts for a £82m maintenance depot and offices in Doncaster for Agility Rail and Hitachi Rail.
Leadbitter’s £100m regeneration scheme for Bedford Borough Council
Sir Robert McAlpine’s £50m redevelopment project at Newcastle University

The number of contracts across the top 50 increased to 209 in May, from 169 in April. Giving an average contact value of £10.9m, which is marginally up on April’s average of £10.8m.

Over the 12 months to May 2014 Kier won 273 contracts worth a total of £1.88bn. Balfour Beatty fell to second over the period with 135 deals at £1.74bn, while Morgan Sindall climbed one place to third having secured 192 contracts totalling £1.28bn.

Hoare Lea climbed from third to first in the Engineering Consultants league for May, with the previous month’s top firm URS dropping to thirteenth place.

Jacobs re-entered the table in second place, as did Fichtner, whose single £120m deal was enough to secure third place.

The Department of Health stood in the number one spot in the Clients’ league, with 274 deals worth £1.5bn. Network Rail and the Greater London Authority both dropped down a place, and Land Securities dropped out of the top fifty.

The total value of work awarded by the top 10 clients in the year to May fell 6.3% compared with the year to April, to stand at £7.32bn.
